Cultural dishes hold a special place in our hearts. No matter how much you enjoy learning about cuisines from around the world, once in a while everyone needs to taste the flavor of their childhood, that reminds them of their culture and first home. Khichdi is that dish for me. For anyone who has stayed away from home, khichdi seems even more charming, isn’t it?

Easy to make, deliciously flavored and a wholesome meal - Moong Dal Khichdi.

For the major part I followed @ranveer.brar ’s recipe. I love split moong in every way, so most of the times I use them. You can also use the yellow whole moong and it tastes equally good. If you would like to learn more about these lentils, Chef Ranveer has explained it nicely in his YouTube recipe.

Recipe :

  1. Instant pot - On sauté mode, take 1-2 tsp olive oil and sauté (soaked) 1 cup spit moong and 1 1/2 cup rice.

  2. Add 1 tsp turmeric, and salt to taste and pressure cook them 7 minutes on high pressure. You can also do the same in your regular pressure cooker. For 4-5 whistles

  3. In another pot, heat 2-3 tbsp ghee (clarified butter), add 1 tsp each of mustard seeds, cumin seeds and asafetida, 2 cloves, 4-5 curry leaves and 1-2 Dry red chillies

  4. Sauté finely chopped ginger and onions. Cook until pink

  5. Add finely chopped tomatoes. You can also add any veggies if you like.

  6. Add the masala box spices - 1 tsp red chili powder, 2-3 coriander cumin seed powder

  7. Finally, add the pressure cook dal and rice and cook on medium flame for 5-7 mins. Add water as needed.

  8. Adjust the salt and finish with cilantro and dollop of ghee!
